FEB. 26: Half Full In Lewes, DE.

Patrons enjoy the view onto Second Street

Though the popular pizzeria and wine focused Half Full has been located in downtown Lewes for close to 8 years, the cozy restaurant recently moved to a much needed larger space on Second Street late last summer.

The move was a great decision. Co-owned between Matt DiSabatino, his wife Ali, Chef Ian and his wife Joanna Crandall, Half Full still packs a crowd hungry for their mouth-watering pizza.

Everything is house made including the amazing pastries and baked good courtesy of pastry chef Joanna Crandall (who worked as a baker for 5 years in D.C. at Cakelove on U Street N.W.)

Head Chef Ian Crandall (who worked as executive chef at the popular Café Deluxe on Wisconsin Avenue N.W. in D.C. for 12 years and who is also Head Chef of Kindle in Lewes – another DiSabatino /Crandall co-owned restaurant) compared the art of making pizza to making a work of art – except this time the canvas is replaced by the dough (also made in house and delicious).

There is a definite metropolitan, urban vibe in Half Full, but without the rough edges of the big city. The place practically glows at night with warm red walls and soft golden light reflected through bottles of wine which seem to be everywhere. It’s still a space that could be considered on the small side, but it doesn’t feel cramped or overbearing. Many of the patrons we spoke to referred to it as intimate and charming.

They have weekly specials (during our shoot, the off-season half price pepperoni pizza seemed to be a popular choice among the patrons) and Wednesday night is buy a bottle of wine and get a free pizza night.

The pizza is truly spectacular tending towards the gourmet side of the palate ( with offerings such as Saltimbocca, Gouda Chicken and Beef & Blue) and they are available at a variety of prices.

If you’re looking for a cozy night out in the big city without actually being in the big city, then you should put Half Full on your must experience list. As Matt DiSabatino said himself during our interview, eating at Half Full is a little bit like being on vacation.
